Search "AI girlfriend" on an iPhone and you hit a wall that desktop users never see. The App Store returns a grid of soft-focus icons, almost none of which are the platforms this site reviews, and most of which lead to the same experience: a filtered chatbot and an early paywall.
That's not bad luck. It's policy. This guide explains the background you need, shows you the install method that gets the real apps onto your home screen, then ranks seven apps by our review scores, which come from each app's pricing pages, terms, billing rules and user ratings (how scores work), and says how each one runs on an iPhone: native app or web app.
Why Your App Store Search Failed
Apple's App Store Review Guidelines reject "overtly sexual or pornographic material" (rule 1.1.4). There is no NSFW category and no exception for AI. A platform whose selling point is explicit chat and image generation cannot ship that product as a native iOS app.
The cautionary tale is Replika, which stripped erotic roleplay in February 2023 to stay in good standing with the stores, and only partly restored it later. Most NSFW platforms drew the same conclusion: Candy AI, OurDream AI, Secrets AI, GirlfriendGPT, GoLove AI and Xotic AI all run as web apps, and several say on their own help pages that they have no App Store app. Secrets AI's wiki adds that any store listing using its name is not affiliated with it.
The exception worth knowing is Kindroid: an official iPhone app, rated 18+, whose moderation guidelines explicitly allow NSFW roleplay in private chats. Its help center also says the iOS and Android apps apply stricter image rules, so on iPhone it is a text-first experience. Beyond that, be wary of App Store lookalikes: the iOS app called "DreamGF - My AI Friend", for example, is sold by an individual developer, not by the company that runs dreamgf.ai.
Install the Real Thing in Under a Minute
The workaround is built into iOS and takes about sixty seconds per app:
- Open the app's site in Safari.
- Create your account and log in first, so the pinned app opens straight into your chats.
- Tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen.
- Rename it whatever you like before confirming. The icon label is yours to choose, which is its own kind of discretion.
The result launches full-screen without the Safari toolbar, keeps its own login session, and on iOS 16.4 or later can receive push notifications. Billing happens on the site, outside Apple's payment system, which is one reason web prices can be lower than in-app prices; Kindroid, for example, says its web price is slightly lower than in its app.

What iOS Still Breaks (Read Before You Subscribe)
Pinned web apps close most of the gap with native apps, but not all of it. Four things stay imperfect on iPhone:
- The first tap rule for audio. Safari doesn't autoplay sound, so the opening voice message of a session can wait for a screen tap. It's Apple's rule for any web app, not the platform's.
- Notifications are recent and fussy. Web push only works on iOS 16.4+ and after you add the app to your home screen. Treat "she messages you first" features as a bonus, not a promise.
- Backgrounding can interrupt long generations. iOS may suspend a web app you switch away from; if a video or image seems stuck, reload to check whether it finished.
- No Face ID lock. A web app can't gate itself behind Face ID the way a native app could. Your discretion tools are the icon rename during install, Safari private browsing for casual visits, and a passcode on the phone itself.

A web app pinned from Safari installs nothing and can't read your contacts, photos or files. The practical risks are privacy ones: read what the privacy policy says about your chats (Candy AI's, for example, allows passing messages to third-party AI providers), check the name on your card statement (Candy AI shows EverAI), use a dedicated email, and remember Safari history and Screen Time list visited sites unless you browse privately.
