Kindroid is an AI companion app: you create or pick a character (a "Kin"), then chat, swap voice messages, call, and request selfies or short videos of them. It runs on the web and has iPhone and Android apps; one account and one subscription work on all three. Since 1 October 2026 it is paid-only, with a 50-message preview for new accounts.

Everything below comes from things anyone can check: the kindroid.ai Help Center (its Subscriptions, In-App Purchases, Memory, Voice, Selfies, FAQ and Moderation Guidelines pages), the terms of use effective 6 October 2026, the App Store listings in the US and France, the Google Play listing and Trustpilot, all read on 20 October 2026. It is not a hands-on test, so there are no chat logs or sample images, and no verdict on how well Kindroid writes. This page replaces our April review, which quoted a $13.99 plan we could not source and graded chat impressions we can't re-check.

What You Get

What the standard subscription includes, per Kindroid: unlimited messages on its newest chat models, Cascaded and enhanced long-term memory, 10 Kindroids and 20 group chats, voice and video calls, custom voices, the monthly audio credits, selfies, video selfies and group selfies, daily rewards, web search and link sharing, sending your own images and videos to your Kin, proactive messages, calendar integration and Social posting.

• Companions: build your own, or start from a ready-made Kin in the Community tab, where subscribers share character templates.
• Group features: group chats with several Kins, and "Rooms" where friends and their Kins share one private conversation.
• Kindroid Social: a feed where users post about their Kins. NSFW is not allowed there.
• Interface: 41 languages for the menus. The old V1 interface was retired on 1 October 2026.
• Operator: Beautifully Incorporated, 5551 Hollywood Blvd #1277, Los Angeles, California, also listed as the seller on the App Store.

Character Creation

Kindroid's character tools are text-first: instead of picking from long dropdown lists, you write the character. From the Help Center's "Customizing personality" and "Memory" pages:

• Personality: up to 2,000 characters of free text, or 2,500 for subscribers, plus a required greeting message. A generator can draft both from a 200-character description.
• Steering fields: backstory, key memories, example messages (which shape reply format and length) and a response directive, which Kindroid describes as the highest-priority instruction.
• Models: a choice of chat models (Polaris and legacy versions for subscribers), a "dynamism" setting for how creative replies get, and a reasoning-effort control.
• Looks: legacy preset avatars, your own uploaded image, or an avatar generated from a text prompt, in realistic or anime style. Uploading a picture of a real person other than yourself is against the terms.
• Voice: a few default voices, or a custom voice for subscribers, designed from a text description or cloned from a minute or two of audio you own the rights to.
• Limits: 2 Kindroids on the free preview; 10 Kindroids and 20 group chats on paid plans, with more slots for sale.
• Age: the service is 18+ only, and Kindroid's moderation rules treat any character depicted as a minor in a sexual context as a violation, whatever age the user types in.

The trade-off is effort: a free-text personality is only as good as what you write, and the Help Center spends pages on how to word directives. If you'd rather pick a character and start, the Community tab is the shortcut.

Memory by Plan

Kindroid's memory page is specific about how memory works, though not about how much each tier gets:

• Short-term context: the recent chat plus your backstory and other fields. Every character of backstory takes space away from recent messages, so Kindroid advises keeping it short.
• Cascaded Memory: a medium-term system for subscribers that Kindroid says lets a Kin recall "hundreds and even thousands of messages prior", with some details missed.
• Long-term memory: unlimited in quantity but recalled less reliably, by relevance. It gets "stronger" on higher tiers.
• Learned Context: three editable notes the Kin keeps updated (800, 1,200 and 800 characters).
• Journal entries: lorebook-style entries of 20 to 500 characters, recalled when you use a keyphrase.

The exact context size per tier (Standard, Ultra, MAX) is only in the pricing matrix under Profile → Billing, behind the login wall. Ultra and MAX exist to sell more memory.

Selfies, Videos & Calls

Media runs on selfie credits. From the "Selfies, video selfies & avatars" page:

• Standard credits: for subscribers they "refill every 30 minutes, up to 25", with faster refills on Ultra and MAX. Daily login rewards add more; on day 7 of a streak the reward can be a 100-selfie jackpot.
• Paid credits: packs of 50 or 100. They skip the queue penalty that builds up when you request many selfies in a row, and make videos cheaper.
• Video selfies: up to 8 seconds cost 5 standard or 2 paid credits; up to 15 seconds cost 10 standard or 4 paid.
• Group selfies: 2 or 3 Kins (or you) in one image, in the same realistic or anime style.
• Avatar animation: 4 credits per animation, used on the Kin's portrait in chat and calls.
• Models: Vignette became the default selfie model on 12 October 2026; older models (Atelier and others) stay selectable.

Voice messages, voice calls and video calls are subscriber features, all paid for from one monthly pool of audio credits:

• Monthly allowance: 1,000,000 credits on Standard (the trial gives 150,000 and adds 850,000 when it converts). Ultra and MAX get more; the amounts are in the in-app matrix. Unused credits don't roll over.
• Conversion: Kindroid's rough guide is 1,000 characters ≈ 1 minute of speech on the oldest model (V2). V3 costs 1.5× and V4 1.75×, and new Kins start on V4 Fast.
• Call surcharge: 400 extra credits for every full minute a voice or video call stays open.
• Top-ups: packs of 500,000 credits, which Kindroid says it sells "at breakeven". By its own estimate, a pack covers about 500 minutes on V2 or about 286 minutes on V4.

Standard's million credits cover up to roughly 570 minutes a month of V4 speech by Kindroid's own conversion rates, fewer if much of it happens on calls. Adult Content & Rules

Kindroid is explicit about adult content in private chats. Its Moderation Guidelines list "NSFW and Erotic Roleplay (ERP)" under what is "explicitly allowed", and the FAQ calls Kindroid "a neutrally aligned, unfiltered AI". The guidelines say Kindroid doesn't filter individual messages. Instead, an automated system scans your messages and character fields for three red lines:

• Imminent self-harm (concrete plans, not venting or fiction)
• Imminent harm to real people (fictional violence and consensual-non-consent roleplay are named as allowed)
• Sexual content involving minors, zero tolerance, including "18+" labels on characters described as children

Repeated detections trigger a warning, then an account lock. Kindroid says a human only reads the flagged content if you appeal and consent to it.

Images are a different matter. The Help Center says generated media "may be checked against the content guidelines that apply" depending on where you use Kindroid, and that "the iOS and Android apps use stricter image rules". Flagged selfies are deleted and the credit refunded. Kindroid does not say publicly how explicit selfies can be on the web, and we can't tell without an account. Two Trustpilot reviewers (February and September 2026) say NSFW is more restricted in the app-store versions and use the web for it. There is no documented "NSFW mode" switch.

Shared Kindroids and Kindroid Social are SFW: explicit content isn't allowed anywhere in shared characters, and since a 17 October update, suggestive listings are hidden unless you turn on "Show Suggestive Content".

Prices & Which Plan

Kindroid does not publish prices on its website. The Subscriptions page lists plan lengths only and says "you'll see the exact price for your country and platform at checkout", which on the web means after you sign up. The app stores do list them. Prices seen on 20 October 2026:

Which plan to pick:

• To start: Standard, billed monthly. The yearly plan saves $31.89 against twelve monthly payments, about 17%, a modest discount for this category, so a month at $15.99 is a fair way to try it. If you can, buy on the web: Kindroid says web prices are "slightly lower" than in the app stores because of lower processing fees (we couldn't see them without an account).
• Once you know you'll stay: Standard yearly, $159.99, about $13.33 a month.
• Only if memory becomes the limit: Ultra ($28.99 a month on top) or MAX ($68.99 more). Both are monthly only and can only be bought after "significant interaction history"; Kindroid says they exist to cover the cost of longer memory.
• Extra voice: a 500k audio pack at $14.99 works out at roughly 5 cents a minute of V4 speech.

The first time your subscription lapses, Kindroid says you "may be offered" half price on your first month back.

Before You Pay

No free tier, and a card for the trial

According to Kindroid's FAQ, the Lite model and unlimited free messaging were retired on 1 October 2026. A new account gets a one-time preview, per the Subscriptions page: 50 messages on the flagship model (15 in some regions; regenerate, continue and message suggestions count as half a message), 5 selfies (one at signup, then one every 2 hours), 5,000 audio credits (roughly five minutes of the oldest voice model) and up to 2 Kindroids. When the preview runs out, the account becomes read-only: you can read, replay, export and delete everything, but not send messages, call, or receive messages. The preview is one-time only: starting a trial or subscription ends it, and deleting your account doesn't reset it.

The 3-day premium trial requires a payment method and converts into a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends; Kindroid says it emails a reminder one day before. On the web, the trial also needs a verified mobile number, and in some regions it isn't offered on the web at all. During the trial, chats use the Ember model; Polaris and the older models unlock only once you pay.

Billing, refunds and who runs it

• Prices: visible in the App Store and Google Play listings; on kindroid.ai they only appear at checkout. Ultra and MAX allowances are only shown in the app.
• Refunds: "While we generally do not offer refunds and all sales are final, we reserve the right to issue refunds at our discretion." Kindroid also reserves the right to permanently ban users who dispute charges. In-app purchases are not refundable, and cancelling gives no prorated refund.
• Cancelling: self-service. On the web: Profile → Billing → Kindroid Standard Subscription → Manage. In the apps: through Apple's or Google's subscription settings. Ultra and MAX must be cancelled separately; cancelling Ultra while keeping MAX leaves you paying for MAX at Ultra's service level.
• Deleting your account doesn't cancel billing. The FAQ says so explicitly. Cancel first.
• Company: Beautifully Incorporated, 5551 Hollywood Blvd #1277, Los Angeles, California 90028. The terms are governed by Delaware law, with disputes going to binding individual arbitration (JAMS) in Los Angeles and a class-action waiver. You can opt out of arbitration by letter within 30 days of accepting the terms.
• Payment: on the web, major cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Amazon Pay and Cash App; no gift cards. Crypto isn't mentioned. You can't move a subscription between web, iOS and Android until it runs out.
• EU buyers: on the French App Store, Apple notes that Beautifully Incorporated has not identified itself as a trader, and says EU consumer law therefore does not apply to contracts between you and the seller.
• Age checks: paying counts as age verification. Free accounts can be flagged by a background "behavioral age estimation" system and asked to subscribe or verify with Yoti (selfie estimate or ID).
• Privacy claims: Kindroid says chats, audio, selfies and memories are encrypted and that its support team can't see chats. You can export your data once every 30 days.
• Marketing figures: the About page advertises "4M+ downloads"; we could check the store ratings, not the download figure.

User feedback

On 20 October 2026 the iPhone app averaged 4.8 out of 5 from about 9,900 US ratings, and the Android app 4.4 from 26,200 reviews, with more than a million downloads. Trustpilot, which Kindroid has not claimed, shows a TrustScore of 2.6 from just 20 reviews, 11 of them 1-star. The complaints that repeat there are value for money ("every month give you less and less"), moderation and account restrictions, and paid credits that didn't arrive (a voice pack in December 2025, an Ultra audio allowance in March 2026). App store ratings come mostly from people still subscribed; Trustpilot leans towards people who left. Our score uses the App Store rating, the largest source with 50+ reviews.

NSFW roleplay in private chats is explicitly allowed, cancelling is self-serve, and the iPhone app's 4.8 from about 9,900 US ratings is a strong user signal. What to weigh: there is no free tier any more and the trial converts automatically; website prices stay hidden until checkout; explicit images aren't documented as allowed and are stricter in the mobile apps; bigger memory costs $28.99 to $68.99 a month on top, monthly only; and refunds are generally refused.

Look elsewhere if you want a free AI girlfriend (50 messages is a preview, not a tier), long memory without paying $40+ a month, a refund safety net, or mainly explicit images, especially on iPhone or Android (see our NSFW AI image generators guide).
