Sakura.fm is a web app for chatting with AI characters that users create and publish, with companion apps on iOS and Android. This review is based on what anyone can check: the Sakura+ plans page and the plan data it loads, the interface text the site ships, the terms of service and privacy policy (both dated 6 January 2024), the App Store and Google Play listings, and Trustpilot, all read on 20 October 2026.

It is not a hands-on test: there are no chat logs or sample outputs below, and anything that only shows up inside an account, such as the exact daily message limit, is described as behind the login wall.

What You Get

The apps are listed as Sakura – Chat with AI Bots, and the terms name the operator as Sakura AI, LLC, 1901 Starboard Way, Jacksonville, Florida. The App Store listing sums up the pitch: chat with user-generated characters, create your own, role-play.

• A public library, not a roster: the homepage lists community characters ranked by message count. On 20 October the most-used one showed about 9.2 million messages. Tags on the front page were mostly Anime, OC, Yandere, Tsundere, Bully, Dominant and Male or Female.
• Mixed audience: many top characters are male, and the library leans toward romance and drama scenarios rather than an AI girlfriend product. If you want a companion app instead, our best AI girlfriend apps list is the better starting point.
• Media: chat is text, with a Speak button to read replies aloud. Images in chat are tied to the top Infinite tier, and the creator can generate a character portrait from a description.
• Apps: iOS and Android apps from the same company (details under Before You Pay).
• Community: support, Sage applications and tier perks all run through Sakura's Discord server.

Characters & customization

The character side is where Sakura is broadest. What follows comes from the creator's interface text and the public character data, not from building characters ourselves:

• Character fields: name, description, persona, scenario, instructions, first message, example conversation and optional author's notes, plus tags, a character image and a separate chat background image.
• Import: characters can be imported from a JSON or image file.
• Portraits: you can type a description to generate a portrait. The Android app refuses mature queries here "due to Play Store policies".
• Visibility and rating: each character can be public, unlisted or private, and creators can mark it NSFW. Marking it NSFW brings up an "Acceptable Content Notice" and an "I am 18 years or older" checkbox.
• Voice: public characters carry a voice type used by the Speak button.
• Model choice: you pick the model per chat, and there's an option to animate long responses.

The App Store description also lists "Create virtual duplicates of real people" as a feature. We'd skip that one: building a chatbot of a real person who hasn't agreed to it is a consent problem, whatever the platform allows. Because almost everything in the library is user-made, quality depends on whoever wrote the card; message counts show what's popular, not what's well made.

The model list

Sakura shows its models by name, with a one-line description for each. These descriptions are Sakura's, not ours:

The older Honey model ("shorter and more direct responses") still has a description string in the interface, but it is missing from the model list the site uses for plans and chat settings on 20 October. Three free models is the current number.

Adult Content: How the NSFW Switch Works

Here is how adult content works, going by Sakura's own interface text:

• The switch: "Show NSFW (18+)" in settings, with the warning "By showing NSFW, you are enabling potentially sensitive content."
• In chat: a "Mature Content Detected" notice ("It appears that there may be mature content present in this chat session") with a Proceed button.
• Automated moderation: a "Policy Violation" message says the "automated moderation system flagged this message", adding that it "may occasionally flag content incorrectly and no penalties have been applied". The moderation labels in the site code cover minors, rape, incest, bestiality, hate and religion.
• Rules: the NSFW notice says "mature content involving minors, sexual assault, slavery, biological incest, bestiality, racism, or hate speech is strictly forbidden", with suspension or termination for violations.
• Images: the Android app blocks mature image requests under Play Store policy, and the public pages document no explicit image output, which is why Adult Content Scope scores 7.0 (explicit text) rather than 10.

Free, Sage or Sakura+

Sakura rations messages per day. When you hit the cap, the interface shows a "Daily Message Limit" notice with two buttons: "Upgrade to Sakura+" and "Get Free Messages". The size of the cap isn't printed on any public page.

How Sage works, per Sakura's own interface. The plans page invites you to "Apply for Sakura Sage by supporting the Sakura community on social media platforms" and sends you to Discord after you connect a Discord account. The interface then shows Sages a "New video for Sages!" message: to continue chatting, upload a screenshot showing you watched and liked the video. The screenshot is checked automatically first; if that fails, you are told to retry or open a ticket in Discord.

So Sage isn't a one-time unlock: new videos come with new screenshot requests, and you pay in likes, views and a Discord membership instead of money. Sage uses the same three free models as the free tier; the stronger models stay on paid plans.

Pricing & Which Plan to Choose

We loaded the plans page from France. Unlike most sites in this category, it showed US dollars, not euros. The subscription notice the site shows Android app users says prices "are in USD and may vary in regions other than the United States", with your region's price shown at checkout. Prices seen on 20 October 2026:

Where the numbers come from. The web plans page lists Free, Diamond, Infinite and Sage; its Yearly toggle carries a "Save 40%" badge, and the plan data behind it sets the yearly prices at $131.99 and $274.99. The US App Store lists the same five in-app purchases: Gold $5.00, Diamond $19.00 and $131.99, Infinite $39.00 and $274.99. Gold does not appear on the web plans page at all. The memory and Discord perks come from Sakura's tier descriptions, which never put a number on "double", "triple" or "infinite" memory.

An earlier version of this review described a separate "Legendary" tier between Diamond and Infinite. The plan data has no Legendary product: Infinite's internal entitlement is named "legendary", so Legendary looks like Infinite's earlier name, still visible in some perk labels.

Fusion Mode, in Sakura's words, gives you "a Variety of Responses for every message". The Infinite card promises "Ultra-Immersive Images" and that your characters will "Never Forget the Moments you share together". Those are marketing lines; we can't check them from outside an account.

Monthly vs yearly

Sakura has no weekly billing. The table spreads each plan over a month:

The "Save 40%" badge is accurate, even slightly modest.

Which plan we'd pick: start free. If the daily cap is your only problem, Sage removes it at no cost on the same three models. If you want the stronger Dragonfruit model, the bigger memory and no screenshot requests, Diamond is the plan: try one month at $19, then switch to yearly Diamond at $131.99 ($11.00 a month) once you know you'll keep using it. Infinite costs twice Diamond for one extra model, images in chat and memory Sakura calls "infinite" without explaining it; only worth it if in-chat images matter to you. Because fees are generally non-refundable (see below), $131.99 or $274.99 upfront is a commitment.

Before You Pay

Refunds, cancelling & who runs it

• Company: Sakura AI, LLC, 1901 Starboard Way, Jacksonville, FL 32259, United States. Florida law governs the terms; EU consumers keep the mandatory protections of their own country.
• Refunds: "Except when required by law, paid Subscription fees are non-refundable." Sakura may consider some requests "on a case-by-case basis" at its sole discretion. In-app purchases follow the store's refund policy.
• Renewal: plans renew automatically under the terms. The subscription notice shown to Android app users adds that "No free trials are currently offered" and asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the billing cycle; it also reminds you that uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription.
• Cancelling: the terms let you cancel from your account settings or by contacting the company; access continues until the paid period ends. In-app subscriptions are cancelled through Apple or Google.
• Web payment: the payment menu in the site's current code offers a "Crypto Payment" button, which creates an invoice with the crypto processor NOWPayments, plus "In-App Purchase" outside the Android app. Card and PayPal run "via GankNow", a third-party subscription platform: you subscribe on Sakura's GankNow page, then enter your GankNow username on Sakura to link the plan. Those two buttons only appear when a server-side setting allows it, which we can't see without an account, so card payment on the web isn't guaranteed for everyone.
• UK visitors: a notice in the site code tells UK users that, under Ofcom's rules, some of them "may be unable to access NSFW content", and that a credit card purchase of Diamond or Infinite lifts the restriction. In other words, payment doubles as the age check there.
• Price changes: the terms promise reasonable prior notice, effective at the end of your current period.
• Data: the privacy policy (6 January 2024) says service providers may use personal data for advertising, marketing and analytics, which "may be deemed a sale" under California law. It says nothing specific about how long chat content is kept.
• Support: a dedicated channel on the Discord server, plus support@sakura.fm.

Apps & user feedback

• iOS: "Sakura – Chat with AI Bots" by Sakura AI, LLC, rated 4.8 from about 22,000 ratings, age rating 16+. Latest version 1.1.1, released 23 May 2024.
• Android: same name and publisher, rated 4.7 from about 52,700 reviews, 1M+ downloads, rated Mature 17+. Last updated 29 December 2024.

The store ratings are strong and come from a large base; the User Feedback score uses the Google Play rating, the largest. But neither app has been updated in 2025 or 2026, while the website keeps changing (new models, plan names, payment options). Purchases made in an app are handled by Apple or Google, and the site has a separate "Restore Purchases" flow. If you use Sakura on a phone, the mobile site gives you the current version; on Android it also avoids the Play Store limit on mature image requests. Note also that the store age ratings (16+, Mature 17+) are lower than the 18+ the terms require.

Outside the stores, feedback is thin. On 20 October 2026, Sakura's unclaimed Trustpilot profile showed a TrustScore of 3.4 from just 4 reviews. Two 5-star reviews praise long, expressive replies and the absence of ads. A 1-star review from August 2026 complains about automatic renewal and hard cancellation, and a 2-star review from November 2025 reports a payment declined by the reviewer's bank. Four reviews prove nothing, but the billing theme matches the setup: a web subscription paid by card or PayPal lives on another company's platform.

Moderation of the public library

Sakura's written rules are the right ones; the issue is how they're enforced on the public front page. On 20 October, the homepage served to a logged-out visitor showed 30 user-made characters, all marked safe-for-work. Four were tagged High School, others were built around bullies, step-siblings or a "Teenage Girl" sister. One, with about 1.9 million messages, was tagged High School, BDSM and Big Breasts; its definition calls the character "an 18 year old high school student" and includes a sexual-preferences section. The public character data even carries Sakura's own explicit-text and explicit-image flags set to true for it, and it was still marked safe-for-work. Stating "18" while setting a character in high school is a common way around minor bans. We are not linking or naming these characters. This is why community content costs Sakura half a point in our score; if you see a card like this, report it.

Final Verdict — 7.1/10

Sakura.fm is one of the easiest character-chat sites to start on: public dollar prices, a real free tier, a free route around the cap, and $11 a month for unlimited messages on yearly Diamond.

It earns its 7.1 on clear billing (10.0: public prices, self-serve cancellation, a named US company, case-by-case refunds written into the terms, accurate discount badges) and on user feedback (9.4, from a 4.7 rating over about 52,700 Google Play reviews). Value is solid at 7.0 for a $19 entry plan with unlimited messages and an $11 yearly equivalent. Features (6.2) cover text chat, portrait and in-chat images, read-aloud voice, a strong creator and mobile apps, but no video or live calls. Adult content is explicit text behind an 18+ switch (7.0), not explicit media.

What to weigh before paying: refunds are the exception, web card and PayPal subscriptions run through GankNow, the apps haven't moved since 2024, and the public library has shown school-setting characters with sexual content marked safe-for-work, which costs half a point.
