Free, Local, Private
HammerAI
A one-developer roleplay app that does the thing nobody else in this category does: hands you the engine. Run open-weight models on your own machine for nothing, forever, with no account and no filter — or use the cloud tier and accept the rulebook. The privacy promise is the only one we have tested that came back clean. The pricing page is the only one we have tested that contradicts itself twice.
📋 Table of Contents
Two Engines, One Name
Open hammerai.com and you get a browser chat app. Download HammerAI Desktop and you get something structurally different: an installer that bundles Ollama and llama.cpp, downloads open-weight models onto your drive, and runs them on your own GPU. Same brand, same character library, completely different machine doing the thinking.
That distinction is the whole review. Almost every question people ask about HammerAI — is it free, is it uncensored, is it private, is it any good — has two correct answers depending on which engine is running, and the marketing copy tends to quote whichever one sounds better.
Some numbers first, because the library is smaller than the category average and you should know that before you install anything. HammerAI publishes proper XML sitemaps, so the catalogue can be counted rather than guessed:
For scale: PepHop AI's sitemaps list 35,743 characters, and the big card sites are larger still. HammerAI is not where you go to scroll. It is where you go when you want to control the model instead of browsing the bots — and, usefully, its desktop app added a feature in July 2026 that imports Chub AI character cards directly, which is the polite way of admitting where the deep catalogue lives.
One detail we did not expect: the chat page works logged out, immediately, no email, no age gate click-through, no card. And the model is named in the interface — the free cloud session we opened ran on Mistral-Nemo Instruct 12B, printed above the first message. Naming the model is close to unheard of here. Dippy buries its model tiers in a JavaScript bundle; PepHop shows "70B" on one plan card and nothing on another. HammerAI just tells you.
Bill One — Dollars
Four tiers, quoted publicly in dollars with no login wall: Free, Starter $9, Advanced $18, Ultimate $35 per month. All three paid tiers include unlimited cloud messaging. What actually separates them is context window, number of cloud models, and a credit allowance for images and speech.
| Tier | Price | Cloud messages | Context | Monthly credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 600 / day | 8,192 tokens | 0 |
| Starter | $9 / mo | Unlimited | 16,384 tokens | 1,500 |
| Advanced | $18 / mo | Unlimited | 32,768 tokens | 3,500 |
| Ultimate | $35 / mo | Unlimited | 65,536 tokens | 9,000 |
Publishing exact token counts per tier is the single most useful thing on that page. Memory is the complaint that dominates every review thread in this category, and almost nobody quantifies it — you get "enhanced chat memory" and a shrug. A 65,536-token window at $35 is a real, checkable specification, and it makes HammerAI directly comparable to competitors who refuse to be compared.
Then there are credits: 10 per generated image, 5 per text-to-speech clip. They can be bought outright in six one-time packs, and this is where the pricing stops making sense. We divided every pack and every subscription down to a cost per credit:
| Way to buy credits | Cost | Credits | Per credit | Per image |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiny pack | $1.99 | 200 | $0.0100 | $0.100 |
| Small pack | $4.99 | 600 | $0.0083 | $0.083 |
| Medium pack | $9.99 | 1,300 | $0.0077 | $0.077 |
| Large pack | $19.99 | 3,000 | $0.0067 | $0.067 |
| Starter subscription | $9 / mo | 1,500 | $0.0060 | $0.060 |
| Mega pack | $49.99 | 8,500 | $0.0059 | $0.059 |
| Advanced subscription | $18 / mo | 3,500 | $0.0051 | $0.051 |
| Ultra pack | $99.99 | 20,000 | $0.0050 | $0.050 |
| Ultimate subscription | $35 / mo | 9,000 | $0.0039 | $0.039 |
Four of the six one-time packs cost more per credit than the cheapest subscription — and the $9.99 Medium pack, which buys 1,300 credits and nothing else, is priced above the $9 Starter plan, which buys 1,500 credits plus unlimited cloud messaging, double the context window and twice as many models. Anyone who lands on that page and buys the obvious-looking ten-dollar pack has paid more for less. The packs are worth it only from Mega upward, and even then Ultimate beats them all.
Two more things belong on this bill. Subscription credits expire monthly and do not roll over; purchased pack credits never expire. And payment runs through Gank, a creator-monetisation platform rather than a mainstream processor — with a line on the pricing page that reads, in full: "GankNow does not support refunds, so all purchases are final."
Bill Two — Hardware
Here is where "100% free" gets interesting. Local mode costs nothing in dollars and everything in gigabytes, and to HammerAI's credit it says so in public documentation rather than in a support ticket.
The rule it publishes is simple and correct: a model has to load entirely into RAM or VRAM, so budget the model file's size plus a 10–50% buffer for generation overhead. It recommends q4_K_M or q5_K_M quantisations as the sensible speed-versus-quality trade, and puts real numbers against real cards:
| Model size (Q4) | File on disk | VRAM needed | Cards HammerAI names |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3B | ~2–6 GB | ~6–10 GB | RTX 2060 SUPER 8GB, RTX 3050 8GB |
| 7B | ~4–8 GB | ~6–10 GB | RTX 3060 12GB, RTX 4070 12GB |
| 13B | 10–12 GB | ~12–14 GB | RTX 4070 Ti 12GB+, RTX 4090 24GB |
| 30B | 24–30 GB | ~26–36 GB | RTX A5000 24GB+, multi-GPU |
Read that table as a shopping list and the free tier stops looking free. A 13B model — roughly the quality floor for roleplay that holds character over a long scene — wants a 12GB card. Below that you are on 7B and 8B models, which are perfectly usable but noticeably shallower. With no supported GPU at all, Ollama falls back to CPU inference and generation slows to something you will not enjoy on a long scene.
Two caveats HammerAI states less loudly. The macOS build is offered for Apple Silicon only — there is no Intel Mac download on the desktop page. And its own docs concede that Ollama sometimes splits a model across CPU and GPU, "resulting in mixed utilization configurations, such as 48% CPU / 52% GPU", which is the polite description of a model that almost fits.
What you get back for paying this bill is total: unlimited messages, no quota, no account, no connection. The desktop app added local text-to-speech through Piper or Kokoro in July 2026, so even the voices run offline. You can point it at any Ollama Modelfile, download models from HuggingFace inside the app, and — a feature we have seen nowhere else in this category — proxy to any LLM API with your own key, which is available on the free tier. The July changelog also added X.ai, OpenAI, Pollinations, StabilityAI, NanoGPT, TogetherAI, DeepInfra and FireworksAI as bring-your-own-key image providers.
Bill Three — Rules
The footer of hammerai.com promises "raw, uncensored conversations and deep roleplay with no filters and no limits. Your story, your rules." Both halves of that sentence are true, but not at the same time.
Locally, it is literally true. The model sits on your disk, the inference happens on your silicon, HammerAI's servers are not in the loop, and there is no filter because there is no server to run one. Whatever the open-weight model you chose will say, it will say.
In the cloud, there is a rulebook — and unlike most of this category, it is current, specific and worth reading. The Content Guidelines, last updated 7 April 2026, run to 17 numbered prohibitions. The ones that will actually catch people out:
- No real people, at all — including celebrities. Actors depicted in a role are allowed only if not photorealistic.
- No photorealistic imagery of people or animals, even fully AI-generated, on the stated logic that origin cannot be verified so the rule applies to everything equally.
- Every main profile picture must be PG-13, including on characters flagged Mature. No nudity in the primary portrait.
- Blood incest is banned — but the wording covers blood relatives specifically, which is looser than the step-relation ban several competitors enforce.
- The standard hard lines: underage content with no aged-up loopholes, gore, bestiality, sexual violence, non-fantasy necrophilia, trafficking, extremism, self-harm.
Then there is the third layer nobody mentions: the App Store. HammerAI's iOS listing carries advisories of "Infrequent/Mild Sexual Content and Nudity" and "Infrequent/Mild Mature/Suggestive Themes" — Apple's usual ceiling, the same one that quietly caps Dippy AI. Roleplay that runs freely on your desktop does not automatically run freely on your phone.
So the honest one-line answer to "is HammerAI uncensored": on your own machine, completely; in the browser, within a rulebook that is stricter about images than about words; on iPhone, capped by Apple.
One Month, Priced Three Ways
Concretely: you want a long-running roleplay, roughly 40 exchanges a day, with occasional images of your character. Here is that month down three routes.
Route A — desktop, local, $0. Install once, download a 13B Q4 model, chat without limit, offline, forever. Cost in dollars: nothing. Cost in hardware: a 12GB card. Cost in convenience: no cloud image generation, and your chats live on one machine.
Route B — free cloud, $0. 600 messages a day is 18,000 a month, which is more generous than it sounds: PepHop's $29.99 top tier meters you at 16,000 messages a month. The catch is the context window — 8,192 tokens — and the images, which are not merely limited but unavailable. The Free plan card advertises "Cloud Image Generation, 22 Image Models"; the comparison table lower down the same page shows Free receiving 0 monthly credits; images cost 10 credits each. A listed feature with no currency to spend on it.
Route C — Starter, $9. Unlimited cloud messages, 16,384 tokens of memory, four cloud models, and 1,500 credits — which is 150 images, or 100 images and 100 voice clips. For a category where $9 usually buys a metered allowance and a countdown timer, that is a strong number.
The route most people should take is A if their machine allows it and C if it does not. B is a decent way to try the characters and a poor way to live.
The Privacy Test It Passes
We run the same check on every product reviewed here: open the site in a clean browser, logged out, and log every network request. It is the fastest way to find out whether a privacy claim is a promise or a slogan. Nastia AI prints "100% PRIVATE" on its homepage and loads a Meta pixel and DoubleClick. PepHop sells "secure messaging" and runs two Meta pixels plus Microsoft Clarity session recording, with ad personalisation pre-granted.
HammerAI is the first one that came back clean. Loading the homepage, the pricing page, the character browser and a live character chat page on 31 August 2026 produced requests to exactly four hosts: hammerai.com, its image CDN, a self-hosted Umami analytics instance, and the authentication service. The session set zero cookies. It wrote nothing to localStorage. There was no dataLayer, no gtag, no fbq. No Meta pixel, no Google Analytics, no session recorder, no ad network, no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to.
The privacy policy, dated 29 March 2026, describes the same short stack and names it: self-hosted Umami for page views, Sentry for crash reports, Cloudflare, Supabase and Vercel as infrastructure, Gank for payments. It even links Umami's source code. Two small drifts: the live site now authenticates through a service the policy does not list, and the policy still refers to activating "Pro features", a plan name that no longer exists. Neither is a tracking problem.
One correction to the marketing, though. §2.1 of the policy says "We do not collect any information about your conversations with characters" — flat, unqualified. That is exactly right for local mode and over-broad for cloud mode, where messages necessarily reach HammerAI's servers. The FAQ gets it right: cloud messages "are sent to our servers but are not stored or used for training". The desktop page has the opposite problem, claiming local messages "are deleted each time you close it", while the FAQ says local chats "will remain on your device". Both cannot be true.
What Doesn't Add Up
For a product this transparent about the things that are usually hidden, the paperwork is remarkably careless about the things that are usually easy.
The pricing page contradicts itself twice, in numbers. The plan cards list monthly credits as Starter 1,500 / Advanced 3,500 / Ultimate 9,000. The FAQ further down the same page says "Higher tiers give you more monthly credits (Starter: 2,000, Advanced: 5,000, Ultimate: 12,000)" — inflated by a third to a half. The cards also advertise 2 / 4 / 7 / 14 cloud models; the comparison table beneath them says 2 / 4 / 6 / 10.
The Google Play link is dead. Every page links to play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hammerai.mobile, and the mobile page states HammerAI is "available now on iPhone and iPad via the App Store, and on Android via Google Play". That URL returned a 404 on 31 August 2026, as did com.hammerai.app; a control listing fetched identically returned normally, so this is the app missing rather than Google blocking us. The iOS app is real — HammerAI by Sunspot LLC, ID 6770699376, released 15 July 2026 — though it is averaging 3.1 stars from just 14 ratings, which is too small a sample to mean much and too low to ignore. Watch out for a separate App Store listing called "HammerAi by WGA", a different publisher entirely, whose bundle identifier borrows the hammerai.com name.
The mobile page is selling a tier that no longer exists. It promises "Free accounts get unlimited chat on a selection of cloud LLMs". The changelog for version 1.0.66, dated 18 July 2026, reads: "Add daily rate limits for free users - I've noticed a handful of accounts abusing the LLM system, so this is to curtail that." The 600-a-day cap on the pricing page is the current truth; the mobile page never got the memo.
Refunds appear nowhere in the contract. The word "refund" does not occur once in the Terms of Service. The no-refunds rule lives only in marketing copy on the pricing page. Meanwhile §28 of those same Terms preserves, for EU and EEA consumers, "the right to withdraw from distance contracts within 14 days" and states that the arbitration and class-action waiver do not apply where they conflict with mandatory EU consumer law. If you are in the EU, the binding document gives you a right the FAQ tells you that you do not have. Everyone else is governed by Delaware law and AAA arbitration.
Ads are contractually reserved, even though there are none today. §23.1 of the Terms: "We may display advertisements from third-party advertising networks, including Adsterra and Growl." The changelog for 1.0.62 on 8 July 2026 says "Add back advertisement banners in the chat window for free users." The pricing page lists "No ads (desktop has no ads)" as a Free-tier feature — a parenthesis that quietly concedes the web app is a different story. Yet our audit of the homepage, pricing, characters and a live chat page loaded no ad host at all. HammerAI also sells placements directly: a public rate card offers $1,000 a month for a banner on the Characters or Chat pages, $500 for a text placement, and $1,000 a year for a sponsored blog post, paid by PayPal. Ad-free today, monetised by design.
One developer, bursty cadence. The pricing page opens with "HammerAI is built by one developer as a passion project", and the changelog is written in the first person — "this is just the start of the new memory feature I'm working on". Six releases shipped between 2 and 18 July 2026, which is a serious pace. Nothing has shipped since. Six weeks of silence is not abandonment, but a $35 subscription with a single point of failure deserves that caveat stated plainly.
Pros & Cons
👍 What We Loved
- Local models via bundled Ollama and llama.cpp: unlimited, offline, no account, permanently free
- The only privacy claim in this category that survived our tracker audit — four hosts, zero cookies, no pixels
- Names the model in the chat window; free cloud sessions ran on Mistral-Nemo Instruct 12B
- Publishes exact context windows per tier — 8K, 16K, 32K, 65K — where competitors say "enhanced memory"
- Chat works logged out, instantly, with no email and no card
- Proxy to any LLM API with your own key, on the free tier, plus eight bring-your-own-key image providers
- Exposes real sampler controls: temperature, Top-P, Top-K, Min-P, repetition penalty
- Content and community guidelines both dated April 2026 — current paperwork, rare here
- Local text-to-speech via Piper or Kokoro, and direct import of Chub.ai character cards
👎 What Could Be Better
- The free version's real price is a 12GB graphics card; without a supported GPU it runs on CPU and crawls
- Pricing page contradicts itself twice — credits (1,500/3,500/9,000 vs 2,000/5,000/12,000) and model counts (7/14 vs 6/10)
- The Google Play link advertised sitewide returns a 404
- Mobile page still promises "unlimited" free cloud chat that was capped at 600/day in July
- Free tier lists cloud image generation as a feature while granting 0 credits to use it
- 7,691 characters is a fraction of what the big card sites offer
- "Refund" appears zero times in the Terms; the no-refund rule lives only in marketing copy
- Terms reserve the right to run Adsterra and Growl ads; the changelog says banners returned in July
- iOS app averaging 3.1★ from 14 ratings, and a look-alike listing muddies App Store search
- Single developer, no releases shipped since 18 July 2026
HammerAI Alternatives
Pick by which of the three bills is the one you cannot pay:
| If you want | Go to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The same idea, but a catalogue worth browsing | Chub AI or Janitor AI | Card-site depth — and HammerAI Desktop imports Chub cards directly, so this is a companion, not a rival |
| Photorealistic images of a companion | Candy AI or OurDream AI | Exactly what HammerAI's content rules prohibit, done as the main product |
| Uncensored chat with no hardware and no setup | Nastia AI or SpicyChat | Explicit roleplay from the free tier in a browser — with their own privacy caveats, documented |
| A polished companion rather than a toolkit | Kindroid | Long-running memory and voice without touching a quantisation setting |
| To compare another "uncensored" claim against its own rulebook | PepHop AI | Bigger library, cheaper entry, far worse privacy — the mirror image of this review |
| The shortlist rather than one product | Uncensored AI chatbots or free, no filter | Our ranked guides, including the free options that need no GPU |
Final Verdict — 7.6/10
The most honest engine in the category, wrapped in the sloppiest pricing page.
HammerAI is the only product we have reviewed here that solves the privacy problem by removing itself from the equation. Everyone else asks you to believe a policy; this one hands you the model, unplugs the network, and invites you to verify it by turning off your wi-fi. Our own audit backs the claim up: four hosts, zero cookies, no pixels, no session recorder, on a site whose competitors routinely run three ad networks while printing the word "private" above the fold. Add named models, published context windows, real sampler controls and a bring-your-own-API-key option on the free tier, and this is a toolkit built by someone who assumes the user is an adult.
What it is not is finished. The pricing page disagrees with itself about two different numbers. The Android link goes nowhere. The mobile page advertises a free tier that was capped six weeks ago. The word "refund" is absent from the contract that governs your money, while a clause you would never find on your own preserves a 14-day EU withdrawal right the FAQ denies. None of that is deceptive so much as unattended — one person shipping fast, with the marketing copy trailing the product by a version or two. It still costs a reader real money if they buy the ten-dollar credit pack that is worse than the nine-dollar subscription sitting next to it.
Use HammerAI if: you own a GPU with 12GB or more and want unlimited unfiltered roleplay for nothing, or you want a $9 cloud plan whose specifications are actually written down. Buy Starter, never the small credit packs.
Skip it if: you want a large character library to browse, you want photorealistic images of a companion, or you want a polished product where the marketing copy and the software are describing the same week.
Frequently Asked Questions
Two different kinds of free, and the difference matters. The desktop app runs language models locally through Ollama: unlimited messages, no account, no internet needed, permanently free, with local text-to-speech through Piper or Kokoro added in July 2026. That one genuinely costs nothing. The web and mobile free tier is metered — 600 cloud messages a day, an 8,192-token context window, two cloud models and zero image credits. The pricing page lists cloud image generation as a Free feature while the comparison table on the same page shows Free receiving 0 monthly credits, and images cost 10 credits each. Paid plans start at $9 a month.
On the desktop app with a local model, yes in the literal sense: the model runs on your computer, HammerAI never sees the conversation, and there is no server-side filter to apply. On the cloud side the answer is governed by a 17-point Content Guidelines document last updated 7 April 2026, which bans underage content, gore, bestiality, sexual violence, necrophilia, blood incest, real people and celebrities, and any photorealistic image of a person — and requires every character's main profile picture to be PG-13 even for Mature characters. The iOS build carries App Store advisories of "Infrequent/Mild Sexual Content and Nudity", the usual store ceiling. Unfiltered locally, rule-bound in the cloud, capped on iPhone.
HammerAI publishes its own guidance, which is more honest than most. A model must load fully into RAM or VRAM, so budget the file size plus a 10–50% buffer. Its documentation puts a 7B model at Q4 quantisation at roughly 6–10GB of VRAM and names the RTX 3060 12GB or RTX 4070 12GB; a 13B at Q4 needs about 12–14GB; a 30B at Q4 needs 26–36GB and multi-GPU setups. It recommends q4_K_M or q5_K_M as the speed-quality balance, and suggests simply testing a 7B Q4 and moving up or down from there. Without a supported GPU, Ollama falls back to CPU and generation slows dramatically. The macOS build is offered for Apple Silicon only.
This is the one claim in the category that held up when we tested it. Loading hammerai.com's homepage, pricing page, character browser and a live character chat in a clean logged-out browser on 31 August 2026 produced requests to exactly four hosts: hammerai.com, its image CDN, a self-hosted Umami analytics instance and the authentication service. It set zero cookies, wrote nothing to localStorage, and defined no dataLayer, no gtag and no fbq. No Meta pixel, no Google Analytics, no Microsoft Clarity, no DoubleClick, no ad network. The privacy policy, dated 29 March 2026, names the same short stack and links Umami's source code. In local desktop mode nothing is sent at all.
The site says yes; Google Play says no. Every HammerAI page links to play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hammerai.mobile, and the mobile page states the app is "available now on iPhone and iPad via the App Store, and on Android via Google Play". That Play URL returned a 404 when we checked on 31 August 2026, as did com.hammerai.app, while a control listing fetched the same way returned normally. The iOS app is real: HammerAI by Sunspot LLC, App Store ID 6770699376, released 15 July 2026, rated 17+, averaging 3.1 stars from 14 ratings. Beware a separate look-alike listing, "HammerAi by WGA", which is a different publisher and a different product.
The pricing page says no: "GankNow does not support refunds, so all purchases are final." The Terms of Service — the document that actually binds — never use the word "refund" at all. What they do contain, at §28, is a clause preserving for EU and EEA consumers "the right to withdraw from distance contracts within 14 days", plus a statement that the arbitration and class-action waiver do not apply where they conflict with mandatory EU consumer law. So an EU buyer has a withdrawal right the FAQ does not mention. Elsewhere, Delaware law and AAA consumer arbitration apply, and the marketing copy is the only refund policy on offer.
If you want the local-model idea without HammerAI's small library, its desktop app imports Chub AI cards directly, so that is a companion rather than a rival. For a bigger community catalogue in the browser, Janitor AI or SpicyChat. For photorealistic images of a companion — the exact thing HammerAI's content rules prohibit — Candy AI or Kupid AI. For an uncensored companion needing no hardware and no setup, Nastia AI. Our full shortlist is in the best NSFW AI chatbots guide, and the no-cost options are in free AI girlfriend, no filter.
